Rutabaga American Purple Seed Packet

Heirloom/Open-Pollinated. The American Purple Top Rutabaga produces 6” long, globe-shaped yellow roots with purple crowns. Its roots have yellow flesh that has a smooth texture and a very sweet flavor, and turns a bright orange color when cooked. Its leaves can be also be eaten either fresh when young or cooked as they mature. This heavy producer is easy to grow and has an excellent storage capability too. 90 days. 150 seeds.
Rutabagas are a good source of vitamin C, as well as potassium, fiber and vitamin A. They have a sweet, peppery flesh that can be eaten raw in salads or in a variety of side dishes. I like them boiled and mashed like potatoes and combined with potatoes!

If planting from seed: Plant in a bright, sunny location after the hard freeze season is over. Plant seeds 1/3 to 1-inch deep in rich soil, then water with seaweed solution. This will help germinate the seed and promote root growth. Space 6” apart in rows, with 6-9” between rows. If planting in raised beds, plant 6-9” on center.
